Over 50 Lingayat seers meet CM, demand separate religion tag

Bengaluru, Aug 11: Quick on the heels of a day-long consultation meeting at the Janabharati Auditorium of Bengaluru University in the city on Thursday, more than 50 seers from various Lingayat mutts across Karnataka met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Bengaluru on Friday and submitted a memorandum demanding separate religion tag for Lingayats. 

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the Lingayat seers requested the State Government to secure minority religion status to the Lingayats on par with Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism.

The seers were accompanied by Karnataka’s ministers M B Patil and Vinay Kumar Kulkarni and JD(S) leader Basavaraj Horatti.

Sri Shivamurthy Shivacharya of Chitradurga Mutt led the delegation of Lingayats.

Submitting a memorandum to the Chief Minister, the delegation requested the State Government to give recognition to Lingayat dharma and not to Veerashaiva Lingayat dharma. 

They requested the Chief Minister to recommend their demand to the Central government for immediate acceptance.

The Chief Minister reportedly promised to do the needful after consulting the legal experts.

    It is like the Church of Scientology demanding recognition as a religion. Lingayat seers should see some authority at the Centre if they have followers across the country.
