Udupi, Aug 11: For the first time in the district, Kaup municipality has decided to manufacture liquid fertilizer by using waste from poultry and meat shops. The liquid fertilizers will not only become usable, but also rid the town of stench emanating from these shops. The experiment is going under way from Friday August 11 onward.
Poultry and mutton shops in Kaup account for about a quintal of animal waste every year. The people have often been complaining about effluents from these shops and dirty smell they spread in the town, but the municipality did not know how to handle this problem. A viable solution has now been found, thanks to the combined efforts of the councillors.
V Srinivasan Vellore who represents Indian Green Service, a central government undertaking which specializes in handling of liquid and solid waste, recently had given practical training about manufacture of fertilizer by using waste, to municipal councillors and self help groups. He stated that waste fertilizer units in several north Indian states are doing well.
Under this scheme, poultry waste is put into earthen pot, and jaggery, dung and cow urine are added in specified quantities. The waste should then be covered with grass and foliage before covering it with gunny bag. Water should be sprinkled on it for 45 days. At the end of 45 days, liquid fertilizer will be ready for use after mixing it with ghee and water as mandated. Excess fertilizer can be sold for a profit, it is gathered.
