Mangaluru, Jul 11: Over 39 swimmers from home guard have been kept ready to meet challenges that may be posed in Karnataka coast by natural disasters during the rainy season. All the seven home guard units in the region are coordinating with district natural disaster workforce and the team of swimmers is ready to jump into action anytime when summoned.
The swimmers attached to the home guard unit here are famous all over the state because of their successful operations in case of tragedies in water which happened in the past at various places across Karnataka. Experienced and skilled fishermen, divers, drivers, etc are in this team.
The other units are located at Subrahmanya Bantwal, Sullia, Kadaba, Mulky and Uppinangady. Each of these units is headed by officers who will be guided by district home guard commandant, Dr Murali Mohan Choontoor. District deputy commissioner, Dr K G Jagadeesh, said in the preliminary meeting on natural disasters that taluk level coordination committees have been provided with list of swimmers. He said the swimmers have been provided with private cellphones as well as equipments needed by them. They will be ready to serve all 24 hours of the day, he added.
