Mangaluru, Jul 9: In a tragic incident, three persons drowned in Shambhavi river at Mulky near here on Sunday July 9.

The deceased have been identified as Mahesh, a resident of Mattu, Akshat from Kutyar and Kishore from Someshwar.

It is learnt that they were part of a group of 11 youths who had come to the river near Vithoba Bhajan Mandir for sight-seeing.

The group of friends had visited Mahesh's house in Mattu and later in the afternoon, they went to the river and took a boat ride. During the ride, a few of them jumped into the river for a swim. Among them, a person named Akshit was unable to swim in the currents and started calling for help. Kishore and Akshat rushed to his rescue, but they too got washed away.

Mahesh went after them, and was able to rescue Akshit and bring him back to safety. Mahesh then returned to rescue Kishore and Akshat, but all three of them met watery graves.

It is said that when the youths got into the water, the locals had warned them against doing so.

The locals and fishermen used fishing nets and boats to retrieve the bodies.

Special tahsildar Kishore Kumar, Mulky police inspector Ananth Padmanabha and others visted the spot.

A case has been registered in Mulky police station.

Yes. At what cost? Read this again ... the locals had warned them against doing so.

Inspite of being literate (that's what I presume) and behaving like an illiterate makes no sense. However, ignoring the locals warning meant over confidence thus proving it to be disastrous for themselves and their families. Result ... always pay heed to people's advices. It pays.. at times.

Please my countrymen. Do not swim in the rivers and ocean during the monsoon season. The riptides and undercurrents will drag you in no matter how strong a swimmer you may be. You cannot "see" them. This is a scientific fact. It happens too often. Prayers for the families and friends. It is so sad .
