Kasargod, Jul 8: A 14-year-old girl who was overtaken by fear at the antics of her drunkard father, hurried out of her house and jumped into a well. In this incident, Harita (14), a ninth standard student, lost her life.

Harita was the daughter of Haridas, living near Kolathur government high school located within the limits of Bedagam police station. On Thursday night, Haridas had come home heavily intoxicated. He held a sickle in his hand and created a panicky situation at his home. Feeling threatened by this behaviour, Harita ran out of her home and jumped into the nearby well. The family members shouted for help at which locals came and tried to bring the girl out of well but they failed to find her body as the standing water in the well was very deep.

Fire brigade personnel, who were summoned to help, succeeded in bringing the body of the girl that had got buried in the silt at the bottom. Although she was taken to hospital immediately, the girl could not be saved.

The police have registered a case of suicide and named Haridas as accused for abetting the suicide. Adur police circle inspector, Sibi Thomas, is monitoring the investigation. Kolathur school was given holiday on Friday as a mark of respect for the departed student.
