Bantwal, Jul 3: Bypoll to fill the vacancy created on account of the murder of the then vice president of Karopady gram panchayat in the taluk and Congress leader, Jaleel Karopady, was held on Sunday July 2.
Polling was conducted for the lone panchayat seat at the polling booth set up at the government school at Mittanadka. Tight security had been arranged for the election, and 69 percent of voters exercised their franchise. Out of 517 male voters, 400 polled their votes, while 390 out of 462 women voters took part in the election process. This was stated in a release by tahsildar of the taluk, Purandar Hegde, who happened to be the returning officer for this election.
Brother of Jaleel, Anwar Karopady, had entered the election fray as a candidate supported by Congress, whereas BJP has extended support to Harish Bhat Kodla in this election. As the constituency is located on state's border with Kerala, security had been beefed up.
Counting of votes will take place at the taluk office here on July 5.
