Mangalore, Apr 18: Indian parliament passed Land to Tillers Act, but no such Act was made to handover the home to occupants, said PB D'Sa, noted social activist and president of PUCL.
He was delivering the introductory remarks at the public meet convened to discuss and draw the attention of the authority concerned to the problems faced by land tenants in the district in particular and till Chennai at large at NGO Hall here on Friday April 18.
Eight per cent of people do not own houses. Religious institutions are dominating in this regard. Philanthropists have donated land to religious with genuine concern for serving society, but religious leaders have taken advantage of it to the maximum. They are making business and earning profits in the name of religion, he accused.
Advising tenants to unite for the cause, the social activist cautioned that it is about time to fight for the cause; otherwise the situation may go out of every one's hand, he cautioned.
Gowri Shankar, senior advocate, delivered the inaugural address. Shantharama Bhandary, senior advocate and others were present on the occasion.
The public meet was organized by the association of tenants.
