Mangalore, Apr 17: United National Progressive Alliances (UNPA), headed by left parties, staged a protest in front of DC’s office on Wednesday, April 16 evening, against the Congress-led UPA government for hiking the prices of essential commodities.

Speaking on the occasion, CPI (M) district committee general secretary B Madhav said that owing to the liberalization policies of past NDA and present UPA governments, prices of the essential commodities have gone up considerably. Therefore, people are finding it difficult to meet their daily requirements, therefore, the center should take proper steps to control the prices of essential commodities, he urged.

CPI district general secretary P Sanjeeva said that UPA government is existing in the centre only because of the support of leftists. But the Congress is not considering the demands of leftists seriously. Congress will definitely pay heavy penalty for this negligence, he warned.

Meanwhile, protestors demanded to strengthen the public distribution system and extend it to all common people and reduce the petroleum prices. They also demanded action to be taken against the illegal storage of essential commodities.

S P Chengappa, working president of district Samajvadi Party, Sunilkumar Bajal of DYFI and others took part in the protest.
