Mangalore, Apr 13: A talk on "Wonders of Nanotechnology" was organized by the Association of Physics Teachers (APT), Mangalore University, at St. Aloysius College here on Saturday, April 12.

Speaking to news men on the side lines of the function, C.B Shobhan, coordinator of the Centre for Nanotechnology, National Institute of Technology, Calicut expolated "Imagine manufacturing gold instead of mining for it. It may not be an impossible task," he added.

In this context he joked that if this happens the world economy "will go into a tizzy if gold loses its precious-metal status." According to Shobhan one of the greatest benefits of nanotechnology was that it could be used to re-engineer materials by changing the structure of substances at a fundamental level.

Detailing on the matter he informed "Nanotechnology deals with substances at the billionth level of their basic building blocks that comprise atoms and molecules. When stimulus is applied to substances at micro-level, the results could be astounding," he pointed out.

Further he informed that this branch of science would have wide ranging impact on the field of immunology. It had the potential to change the nature of life forms at the fundamental level, he prophesied.

Moreover he opined that this branch of study lent itself into the invention of new hybrid substances which could transform the socio-economic climate of the world.
