Mangalore, Apr 8: There is a need to change the education system from being teacher-centric to student-centric, said former vice-chancellor of Madras University S P Thyagarajan, while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a week-long national workshop on 'Techniques in Molecular Biology.'

The workshop has been organized by Manipal Life Sciences Centre. The inaugural ceremony was held on Monday April 7.

Thyagarajan also stressed on the need to evolve the education system to make it more interesting to the students and also to make the students centre of the education process. This can be achieved by conducting training programmes and including projects, more field exposure and group discussions etc in the curriculum, he suggested.

He also came up with some other interesting ideas like having brain-teasers' clubs in schools and colleges so as to hone the intellectual skills of the students.

Vice-chancellor of Manipal University Rajshekaran Warrier, pro-chancellor H S Ballal, registrar G K Prabhu and director of the centre K Satyamurthy were present.
