Udupi, May 16: A woman who allegedly stole a child from the district government hospital here was caught and handed over to the police on Tuesday May 16.
The police have arrested Geeta (42), a native of Uppunda and resident of Kinnimulky here, for allegedly stealing and assaulting the six-year-old child.
It is said that Asha, a native of Hanugunda, Bagalkot had come to the district hospital, accompanied by her six-year-old daughter, to see her husband who has been admitted here for the last 20 days.
While Asha was speaking to her husband in the hospital ward, the girl was playing by herself. Geeta's husband was also admitted to the same hospital. On seeing the girl alone, Geeta allegedly approached her and lured her with a chocolate.
Geeta then took the girl to her rented house at Kinnimulky and allegedly assaulted her. The locals on hearing the girl scream suspected that something was wrong. Fearing the locals, the woman took the girl back to the hospital and left her there later in the evening.
By then, the girl's parents had raised an alarm over their missing child in the hospital. When the woman brought back the girl, the locals caught her and handed her over to the police.
Moreover, a CCTV camera captured images of her stealing the child. The child also alleged that she was assaulted by Geeta after being abdudcted.
Asha and her husband are coolie workers from Hanugunda. They have two other children.
A case has been registered in the local police station.
