Mangalore, Mar 27: Domestic waste comprises 70 to 80 percent of the total effluents generated, informed Ramesh Kumar of State Pollution Control Board.

He was delivering a lecture on 'Parisara-Kaanunu' (environmental laws) at a workshop on environment organized by Lioness Club at Ramakrishna High School here on Wednesday March 26.

He further said that local bodies are not cooperating to the fullest and cases have been filed in the courts against them in this regard. Urging the cooperation of public in protecting the environment, he added that pollution control is not possible without the help of the general public.

Reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) is the aim of various environmental activist groups for 2008, he said.

The programme was organized in association with the department of social work of city's Meridian College and Mangalore University.

Sylvester D`Souza, social activist presided over the workshop. Shivaraj of ZP department of forest, Asha Shetty, president of Lioness Club of Kankanady-Padil and others were present on the occasion.
