Mangalore, Mar 24: National Highway (NH)-17 between Panambur and Suratkal was witness here on March 23, Sunday morning to a huge lineup of trucks, buses and other vehicles in a kind of a gridlock, causing vehicular hold-up for several hours.
The major cause for these kind of traffic hold-ups and road blocks have largely been due to the bumper-to- bumper movement of hundreds of trucks carrying iron ore towards Panambur. This has now become the order of the day on the National Highway, requiring urgent remedial measures.
There is utter chaos and congestion on a regular basis when these Panambur-bound trucks come together from Udupi side, requiring the police hours to clear the traffic jam. The trucks are halted at Shiroor along Uttar Kannada-Udupi border by the Udupi administration and released once in two days, inform sources here.
Trying to analyse the reason the sources inform that when these trucks are finally given permission to move, there are around 1,000 in a horde heading towards Panambur. This is the major cause affecting work on NH-17, sources opine.
