Mangalore, Mar 18: With a view to fostering peace and harmony all around, the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind's Sauharda Vahini jaatha (rally) was flagged off here on Monday, March 17 by the deputy commissioner M Maheshwar Rao.
A vehicle carrying messages of communal harmony began a tour of various parts of the city. It will traverse through Suratkal on Tuesday, March 18.
The rally vehicle on its onward journey will also visit Moodbidri, Venur, Beltangady, Dharmasthala, Sampaje, Sullia, Puttur, Bantwal, Kaikamba and B C Road and culminate at Nehru Maidan here on March 29, when another big rally is being planned.
Addressing press persons and others gathered here after flagging off the rally, Rao stated that it is due to lack of communication that many problems arise and opined, 'All religions preach harmony.'
Elaborating on the issue he further said in the recent past religious issues have become a very sensitive matter. But if leaders from all religions come together and discuss the matter, solutions can be found, he stated positively.
“Religious harmony is essential for development. Religion should not come in the way of development,” declared zilla panchayat president K P Sucharitha Shetty in his address.
The chief guests on the occasion were Erya Lakshminarayana Alva, honourary president, reception committee of Dharmika Sauharda Sammelana (DSS), Basti Vaman Shenoy, former president of Konkani Parishat, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, president District Kannada Sahithya Parishat (DKSP) and district Wakf board president Y Mohammed Kunhi.
