Bengaluru: Water sufficient for state till June 15, rationing if required - Govt

Bengaluru, Apr 10 (PTI): Karnataka government today said it has no problem in providing water until June 15 to the people in the state, hit by consecutive years of drought, but there may be water rationing, if required.

Appealing to farmers to stop using pumpsets, it advised the people to use water judiciously, as the water levels in almost all the reservoirs was just enough for drinking needs.

Water Resources Minister M B Patil said that with optimum utilisation and judicious use of water, along with proper planning and coordination, the department will ensure that water is given to the people.

"We have severe drought in Karnataka and this is for the third year. Our priority is that our dam zones throughout the state, wherever we are giving water to the cities or the multi village schemes or towns from our dam is not affected," he told reporters here.

The Department had an internal meeting today and planned to give water up to June 15, he said, adding, the state expects to receive rains by then.

Patil said he has also requested Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to make an appeal to farmers not to use their pumpsets in such a crucial period, as the water available was just enough for drinking purpose.

Patil said, if required, Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewage Board (BWSSB), Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board and Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Departments could resort to some "rationing" of water. "It is they who have to decide- what best possible thing to do is," he said.

According to data on live water storage in various reservoirs, there is a total of 7.748 tmc in Cauvery reservoirs - Krishna Raja Sagar, Kabini, Harangi and Hemavathi.

He said combining Krishna Raja Sagar and Kabini water availability is 4.7 tmc, and the water requirement of Bengaluru city is 800 cusecs per day. "So for next 60 days we have to give 800 cusecs. BWSSB requires 6000 cusecs, but we have calculated transmission losses and in between multi village schemes. So for giving 800 cusecs for 60 days upto June 15 we require 4.1 to 4.5 tmc, what we have is 4.7 tmc so we can manage until then", he said.

On rationing of water, he said the water resources department is a bulk or wholesale supplier of water and it would coordinate with all the departments and district administration and "as a team effort we will try to ensure that there is efficient use of water."

Whatever depth the bore wells can be. Sea water level is the same as we seen right from the time of our birth. As we know water will maintain its level. this is what more confusing here. Every year we read water shortage in March to June. Once rain starts everyone will forget about this. A proper precaution to store rain water in our rivers can definitely solve this problem. BUT WHO IS BOTHERED, WHO CARES. All are thinking Hum hammare liaye, Bhagvan sub ke liaye.

Almost entire DK fields have been converted to areca farms for obvious reasons! Farmers r drawing water to feed these plants as if there was a pipeline from heaven! At most places where water was available around 300 ft, now they have to bore 500+ ft. Morever there is no control over digging of bores like a certain distance to be maintained between two bores so that digging of fresh bore does not affect the existing surrounding bores! Since last year many open wells having good level of water till onset of summer r going dry by March end itself due to unchecked deep bores being sunk by areca farmers to increase their yeild!

This year even many bores have gone dry n newer ones r being recklessly bored by anxious farmers!

Many poor peopl e whose ancestral open wells have gone due to these bores r suffering n have to buy water from thier neighbors having bores!

This cannot sustain for long as ultimately entire areas will go dry n we will see a desert! This has started happening in places like Shivamogga, Chitradurga etc.! Also water sucked from below 300 ft is nonpotable as it contains arsenic n fluoride which is very toxic to man!

Mind u in this run to increase areca produc, we will meet the nemesis of entire areas going dry!

What is being gotten now is a short term burst of money, which will not last too long!

    Rest u think! !

Cheers n lots of good luck!

May be digging deep trenches in regular intervals of Ghatabrabha river may help store some more water for summer days. May be it is right time to do this experiment for the benefit of future years and thus improvement of water table. Water may evaporate to large extent, but large amount of stored water will not go dry quick. Sadly politicians are busy mud sliding and crooked ways to gain power and vote!

Water situation is very critical, ground water table has drastically gone down due to rampant/unchecked drilling of bores mostly by greedy areca farmers!

Mangalore city residents, w/o captive water, have to depend on tanker supply, imagine another 2 months to go for monsoons!

BUT, I WONDER HOW SO MANY SKYSCRAPERS R BEING PERMITTED TO BE BUILT STILL BY THE MUNICIPALITY?? WHO WILL SUPPLY WATER WHEN THE EXISTING SET UP IS YEARNING FOR WATER??

    SMART CITY, SMART PLANNERS!

Rudolf, do not call areca farmers greedy! It is hard earned money by sheer hard work despite crop damage by weeds and areca related diseases! When water table goes deeper, it is necessity to get water by bore wells! By watering areca, land water table may improve! Areca farming is much better profession than gow rakshak, moral policing, religion protectors and some of the corrupt political profession practices! Conservation of water in mass scale by preventing as much water into the sea may be only way out. Most rivers in Udupi are fairly full for the season though dirty by throwing garbage and venting drains due to minor irrigation projects and vented dams. People and farmers need to be educated towards conserving water! Few City dwellers can only preach rather than making any contribution to such situation!

FOR THE PAST TWO TERMS WHEN CONGRESS RULED COUNTRY IT WAS BUSY IN CORRUPTION.

NOW BECAUSE MODI IS HEADING THE CENTRAL GOVT. IT IS NOT RIGHT ON OUR PART TO BLAME MODI FOR EVERYTHING. THERE ARE STATE GOVT. AND MINISTERS CONCERNED TO TAKE CARE OF THE WATER CRISIS.

INSTEAD OF SPENDING SO MANY VOTE BANK BHAGYA'S LET THE STATE GOVT. SOLVE PROBLEMS RELATED TO BASIC NECESSITIES WHICH WILL BE HELPFUL FOR ONE AND ALL.

WE HAVE RAW RESOURCES BUT WE DON'T HAVE SYSTEM TO MAKE IT RIPE FOR USE.
WE CAN PREVENT WATER FLOWING TO SEA DURING RAINY DAYS WITH DAMS. LIKEWISE
WE CAN HAVE GOOD QUALITY POWER IF MANAGED IN A BETTER WAY AND QUALITY AIR WITH GREEN REVOLUTION INSTEAD OF CUTTING TREES UNLESS GENUINE REQUIREMENT.

Shortage of water in a densely populated country such as India is a serious problem. Conservation of existing reservoir of water requires group effort and also a group conscience. This is not the time to blame anyone on the mother nature, nor is it wise and prudent to hold anyone accountable. The shortage of water that is sufficient under the present conditions that would last until June 15, 2017 should not be taken lightly nor try to blame anybody. The Act of God should be surrendered to God alone and seek His help and guidance. The time is crucial and we must understand one another in India and help in resolving the situation with one alternative or another and save the humanity from further havoc. Let us hope that the rain would fall and solve our concerns and anxieties. Regardless of the rain falling we have to be prepared for continuous conservation of water so that the future does not confront more difficult problems. This is the time to stand behind our leaders and make them feel that we are all in the same boat.

This is also a time for group efforts for future 'family controls'. Existing over population can be furthered impacted with longer span of life time. Life is always a precious thing but future scarcities of food, water, shelter and even clean air and clean water are some of the most essential criterias that need our group effort and group thinking than placing the blame on the Government who are equally as desperate as we all are.

Let the Holy Week bring us more patience and love, and let us remain united for an united effort that involves our individual and group thought and group effort. God bless

DEEP BORE DRILLING, IF LEFT UNCHECKED, WILL BRING THE ULTIMATE NEMESIS!!

Matter is very serious now..... In Udupi region those who are staying in building feel the burnt.... If situation continues like and if no rains soon..... people may start fighting for water rather than anything else!!!! But the question is....do we have any solution? Are we ready to accept any such project to store water for peak summer? Do we have any capable leader in State Govt to look after this issue? Nothing....as usual....we all cry when there is no water and we curse when there is a flood!!!!
