Udupi, Mar 16: A conceptual debate on the topic 'Realigning Higher Education Institutions (HRI) and Systems for Knowledge Economy was organized here. During the morning session, prof P N Udayachandra, HoD of commerce and registrar, SDM College, Ujire spoke on the occasion.

Prof Udayachandra in the course of his speech opined that with the begining of globalization and the status of education being transformed into a tradable service, the need of the hour is "to re-define and realign higher education institutions and systems to cope up with the changing demands of the economy." 

According to him it is the fastest and not the fittest who survive in the new globalised world by adapting to new situations and equally competitive new environments. 
 
Another speaker on the occasion a principal of Kholeshwar Mahavidyalaya from Beed district in Maharashtra prof Dharadhikari N S pointed out that in India there has been misconceptions that education in particular is a non-productive factory.
 
According to him however, globalization has intersected this concept and compelled us to think from the root itself. Centralized education, planning and control is becoming out of context in this era of distant education, virtual classroom and privatization, he added.

Moreover reeling out statistics he stated that now global public spending on education is to exceed $1 trillion, representing the cost of over 50 million teachers, 1 billion students and hundreds of thousands of educational institutions throughout the world."
