Udupi, Mar 15:
A demand was made to the government to shift the Tebma ship-building yard from Malpe harbour, by the Malpe Fishermen's Association (MFA) at a meeting organized here, on Friday March 14. The meeting was presided over by the president of the Association, Hirianna T Kidiyoor.

The meeting comprising of representatives of several fishermen's organizations and bodies, alleged that Tebma, managed by six individuals does not have any connection to fishing activities.

Further, they alleged that the company has not complied with the terms and conditions of the agreement signed in 2000 with the department of ports. In fact they have encroached on the land earmarked for the third stage works of Malpe Harbour, they added.

However, abiding by the request made by the deputy commissioner the MFA has decided to wait for 15 days to know the response of the company to their queries. Once this waiting period is over and in case they do not receive a satisfactory response the association will go ahead with its non-violent movements demanding the ouster of the said private company, they informed.

Other office-bearers of MFA who participated in the meeting included Rama Kanchan, Gundu B Amin, Vasudev Salian, Dayananda Suvarna, Sudhakar Kotian, Narayan J Karkera, Ramappa S Maindan, Gopal Kundar, Pyaru S Kalmadi, Radha Suvarna, Appi Suvarna, Ramachandra Kundar, Somappa Suvarna, Ramesh Kotian, Shivaraya Puthran and others.
