Kundapur, Apr 4: "Popular Front of India (PFI) had not taken permission from the DC before holding its protest in Mangaluru. Therefore the police tried to send them back. As they resisted, the police had to resort to lathi charge. About 60% of them have been arrested," said ADGP Alok Mohan.
He was addressing reporters during his visit to the DySP office here on Tuesday April 4.
The PFI had held a strong protest in Mangaluru against the alleged illegal arrest and harassment of Ahmed Qureshi from Katipalla Kaikamba at the hands of the police. The protestors were caned and arrested, with some of them suffering injuries. Police personnel too were injured in the incident after stones were pelted by the protestors, police said.
On the murder attempt on Udupi DC and others during raid on illegal sand miners at Kandlur, ADGP Mohan said, "The DC should have conducted the raind after speaking to the superintendent of police. The DC went ahead assuming that nobody would assault her. Sometimes, our decisions go wrong. This is one such incident.
"Innocents have not been arrested. Those who were present there were participants in the incident. We have no doubt about it. We do not touch innocent people. Illegal activities are increasing in Kandlur. Right now I cannot say what action will be taken against them. However, action is guaranteed," he said.
Responding to allegations that the information on raids reaches the illegal miners in advance, he said that it may be true. "Suitable action will be taken against those who leak information. The departments of revenue, mines and geology and the police should jointly conduct raids against illegal sand mining. We will try to eliminate all the illegal activities in Udupi within a month. I have come to the district to prevent illegal activities. We will stop gambling and illegal sand mining," he said.
Kandlur police station to open soon
To a question on police station in Kandlur, he said, "There are setbacks for the inauguration of Kandlur police station. The SP has been asked to open it soon."
On the issue of promotions, he said, "Promotion of SIs is not possible without reason. Their background, sincerity should be scrutinized. Those who are unfit cannot be promoted. Only those who are eligible and are deserving will be promoted."
Earlier, the ADGB accepted the guard from police personnel led by PSI Nasir Hussain. SP K T Balakrishna, DySP Pravin Naik, all the PSIs of Kundapur sub-division were present.
