Mangaluru, Apr 4: 'Proud to be Aloysian' is a phrase every student who has walked the portals of city's St Aloysius College (Autonomous) would be familiar with. Now, the entire Mangaluru has something to be proud of, for, the institution has been ranked second best in the whole of Karnataka and 44th best in India.
The rankings were released by the union ministry of human resource development on Monday April 2. Bengaluru's IISc ranks the best among educational instiutions in India.
Universities and colleges across the country were ranked based on five parameters - Teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.
St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, ranks 44 with a score of 44.00 among the 535 entries nationally.
It is the second college in the state to feature in the list, after St Joseph's College of Commerce, Bengaluru.
Speaking to daijiworld, principal of St Aloysius College Fr Swebert D'Silva expressed his delight in the radiant academic performance, marked nationally and in the state.
"It is a prestigious moment for the institution to be a part of the national rank list of all educational institutes. The board enlists certain parameters for ranking. Our institute has been recognised for exceptional research, a good public perception, fine placements, and students working in a creditable manner wherever placed placing it in the 44th rank. St Aloysius stands 2nd in Karnataka among colleges that have featured in the list. This is creditable for the institution and a joyous moment for Mangaluru," Fr Swebert said.
"For students, it would mean a lot being part of a highly ranked institute. Our students would be preferred in job placements, and will have a wider net of opportunities.
"Every year we add new subjects to the curriculum. So also, this year, we will be adding big data analysis and food science and nutrition. And for the arts section, will introduce performing arts as a subject," he said.
"We are hoping for some more autonomy and grants to make the institution better," he added.
Among other educational institutions in Dakshina Kannada, NITTE University ranked 83rd in the list of top universities and SDM College, Ujire ranked 71 among colleges. In the overall ranking list, Manipal Academy of Higher Education - Manipal ranked 30, and NIT-K Suratkal 65.
The ranking is charted out by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). A total of 2,995 institutions were surveyed this time. These include 232 universities, 1,024 engineering institutions, 546 management institutions, 318 pharmacy institutions and 637 general degree colleges, and others. Many of these have participated in multiple disciplines, adding to a total of 3,319 participants across disciplines.
