New Delhi, Mar 13: Kamlesh's 5-day-old daughter was charred to death, when the incubator in which she had been kept as part of her treatment for jaundice in a government hospital, caught fire.

What makes Kamlesh's agony even more unbearable is the fact that the accident could have been prevented but for negligence.

''I woke up at 12, my baby was crying. There was nobody around, either the nurse or the doctor. I saw fire over her cradle. My baby was crying, I shouted for help, Nobody was around. Everybody was sleeping. They asked me to go out,'' said Kamlesh, mother.

All Kamlesh could do was call on her family.

''We went there after we got the call but they didn't let us in,'' said Omprakash, father.

Authorities say that a short circuit caused the fire. The government has suspended a doctor and two nurses in the wake of the incident.

''We have formed a committee that will gather all the details. The committee will ascertain if it was a medical negligence or a mere accident,'' said Dr Ashok Kumar Dang, Chief Medical Officer, Bhagvan Mahavir Hospital.

But the family says it's too little, too late now.

''Had there been even one person in the room the baby could have been saved,'' said Hukum Singh, relative.

While the administration plans further action against the culprits, for this mother there's only despair on the anvil.
