Koppal, Mar 26: In a shocking incident, a youth slit the throat of his lover and torched her mother after pouring petrol on her, out of anger at the rejection of his marriage proposal. The sadistic lover also tried to kill the duo by stabbing them with a knife thereafter. He fled from the spot thereafter and tried to end his life.
The two women were attacked by Amare Gowda Patil from Salunchimara village in Gangavathi taluk. He was the one who tried to kill Shahanaz Tavaragera (23), working as auxillary nurse midwife (ANM) at Jamalapura health sub-centre in Kushtagi taluk, and her mother, Kamalabi (43).
Amare Gowda who escaped from the scene of crime later tried to commit suicide at Salunchi Srirama Nagar by consuming poison. Shahnaz Begum belonged to Chowdapura in Yalaburga taluk.
Gowda had been pestering Shahnaz to marry him, but the lady steadfastly refused to entertain his advances, as he is already married. This had enraged him, after which he made an effort to eliminate both of them. The mother suffered 30 degree burns, and after providing initial treatment, both were admitted into district hospital at Bagalkot. The young lady succumbed to her injuries, while her mother is showing signs of improvement.
Amare Gowda then consumed poison at Salunchi. He was admitted into a hospital at Srirama Nagar. A case relating to this incident was filed in Kushtagi police station. Police personnel are keeping a close watch on the condition of the accused in order to arrest him immediately upon his discharge from the hospital.
It is said that Shahnaz was waiting with her mother at Kudenur bus stand to catch a bus to Kushtagi where a taluk level meeting of ANMs was held on Saturday, when Amare Gowda came there in a motor bike, and offered to drop them off at Kushagi. He then took both of them to a field near Basavanna shrine between Tengunti and Kushtagi after which he suddenly injured Shahnaz in her throat with a shaving razor. When her mother rushed for help, he poured petrol on her, started fire, and ran away. Both were then brought to the taluk hospital for initial treatment after which they were taken to the district hospital at Bagalkot.
It is said that Amare Gowda had been chasing Shahnaz since the last two to three years since she was working as ANM in Yalaburga taluk. She was recently transferred to Mudenur primary health centre. It is said that the two were living in a rented home there for sometime, but thereafter they parted ways due to some misunderstanding. Recently, Shahnaz's marriage was fixed but Patil pressurized her to marry him although he was already married. It is said that police from Tavaragera station had asked Amare Gowda to mend his ways after Shahnaz filed complaint against him a few months back, accusing him of harassing her.
