Madikeri: Elephant tramples over, kills girl on scooter

Madikeri, March 25: A student on her way to her college was killed by a wild elephant in Ponnampete police station limits, here on Friday, March 24.

The student identified as Safana Mustafa (20), a second year B Com student in Kaveri college, Gonikoppa. She was on her way to college, with her brother Zakeer who was riding pillion, on the morning of Friday.

A wild elephant attacked her suddenly at Bhadragola. Safana died on the spot and her brother escaped with minor injuries.

As the news spread, villagers staged a protest against the elephant menace and asked for a Rs 25 lac compensation for the family of the victim and demanded the capture of the elephant. Assistant conservator of forests of Virajpet, Dr V Shanker visited the place and handed over a cheque of Rs 2 lac as compensation to the family of the deceased.

A postmortem of the dead body was conducted at Gonikoppa government hospital and a case was registered at Ponnampete police station.

    what to say.very sad.Why should be a post martum of the Body who was killed by elefants.Not necessary.Other side as I see they drove in a forest area.People know there are elephants.should take care not to disturb them so go slowly,observe right and left.elefants when they have small calves,even other animals when having thier small ones are aggressive,dont allow People to come nearby.with a Motor bike,scooter makes noice disturbs them .People should be careful.This has to be learnt from People ,so that a life with animals can be peaceful.May the Soul of Young Girl rest in peace.Heartfelt sympathy to the Family.
