Bengaluru: Lights on bikes can't be turned off


Bengaluru, Mar 20 (DHNS): From April, the headlights on all new two-wheelers will stay on once the ignition is turned on, be it day or night.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had made it compulsory that new bikes be equipped with Automatic Headlamp On (AHO) from next month.

AHO, similar to daytime running lamps in cars, is found to be effective in improving the visibility of the vehicle by attracting the attention of road users and improving their response time. According to government data, two-wheelers accounted for nearly 30% of all accidents in Karnataka in 2015. The vehicles were involved in 13,155 of the 44,011 accidents.

Data from the National Crime Records Bureau showed that 32,524 of the 1.4 lakh people who died in accidents were two-wheeler riders. While the feature has become common in developed countries over the past 10 years, the Indian government decided to enforce it only last year. Meanwhile, flummoxed owners of new vehicles are quarrelling with representatives in bike showrooms, asking them to install a switch to kill the headlights.

“Pedestrians and people coming from the opposite side gesture at me to turn off the headlight. I got irritated and went to the showroom, seeking an explanation. I came to know about the rule only later,” said Alok Jhadav, who bought a new bike with AHO last month.

Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had agreed to consider AHO for two-wheelers after a research organisation pushed it as one of the measures to enhance road safety.

Based on directions from the Justice Radhakrishnan committee, the ministry issued a notification in March 2016, making AHO mandatory for all two-wheelers from April 2017. The ministry has also made Bharat Stage IV engines mandatory for all new vehicles from the same date.

Another major decision is the uniform crash test for all vehicles, which will come into effect from April 2018.

    A stupid idea by the committee recommended to the Govt. Even more stupid the concerned ministry accepted and instructed the auto industry to follow it. The battery life will be dramatically come down and the owner of the two vehicle has to spend more money in maintenance. A blow to the lower middle class and poor people who saved some money for this cheap comfort. MPs and bureaucrats are
    using Govt sponsored vehicles. They don't know the cost of fuel and maintenance. If the govt provide pitfall less roads the accident rates will come down remarkably. The ministry should withdraw this instruction immediately.

    Daytime running lights are for those vehicles in colder countries, where the daytime foggy conditions diminish visibility on roads. It will be of no use in a sunny country like India.

    Motor companies advertising only about speed of the vehicles but they forget to advertise the after effect of speed (Ultimate death most of cases)

    Speed is attracted to the young generation hence two wheelers speed should be brought down max 80 kmh.

    These stupid policy makers doesn't really know anything. Does these day time running lamps control accidents? i really cant understand how? They quote study, but these idiots might not have understood the earlier phases of people preparedness and just brought these day time running lamps when they have gone for trips to other countries with tax payers money.
    In other countries the reason behind less number of accidents are due to awareness they create from the earlier age in schools, colleges and after that due to hefty fines and also due to cancellation of driver license after some violations.
    Another reason these people haven't found is the bad Indian roads and good roads abroad. 80% of accidents in India happens due to improper roads and worst road planning.

    Yes.... idiots but not the government we.... the people like me and you vote for idiots it means that we are the biggest idiots. This rule they abide from European law of 2003. Europe is a country where no one can see during snow and fog. I was there in Europe for a while so I know . Unless you switch on light the opposite vehicle can't see you properly.
    But may be the central government may plans for snow falls and fog across the country in short while.
    Already the people are suffering like anything. The banks looting through one side now one by one like this also.
    I am really worried tomorrow the government may ask us to wear underwear only to ride bike so it can prevent the cloths get stuck in the wheel

    i feel dat govt. should bann manufacturing vehicles with more than 100cc. now all the vehiles come with more than 100 cc two wheelers. most of the people specilly students attracted with these kind of bikes n to show off n to make stunts .. most of the two wheel accidents becouse of overspeed and rash riding. i think govt shud think about this .

    WHAT IS THE REAL PROBLEM AND HOW WE DEAL WITH IT?

    Why Do the Surface Transport Sector Suffer Miserably?
    It is because we CARRY AND MOVE the BULLOCKCART on wheels.
    (In fact, the bull never carries weight, but it simply moves the cart).
    During the introduction of the vehicle engine and fuel energy, the brilliance of human did a major change to this simple concept.
    Instead of merely replacing the bulls with vehicle engine, arrogantly he kept both bull and cart on wheels and deliberatly moved the whole load, with the fuel energy (force) and the same silly error, we gracefully follow till today as traditional fashion.

    What are the complements of this fashion?
    We dig, drill and exploit the mother earth to get oil and spend lavishly on fuel to burn the economy.
    We happily inhale polluted air and thankfully suffer the peace disturbing sound pollution.
    Due to inadequate transport facilities, we add and multiply the number of tiny vehicles on roads, which occupy space all over. But still the commuters are moved like goods or garbage in public vehicles.
    As the transport costs heavy, the commodity prices and commuting expenses increase, uncontrollably.
    The family budgets suffer with high costs of living.
    This will have overall impact on education, health, employment and other areas of public life.
    How can we benefit by rectifying the Past Error?
    We can enjoy the heavy burden of commuters and goods on wheels as a blessed boon, by using it as a powerful pushing force.
    We can generate a considerable volume of free and clean energy, (instead of merely spending on fuel) with a simple concept change.
    The unhealthy air pollution and peace disturbing sound pollution from vehicles can be eliminated.
    Adequate cheap and safe surface transport facilties can be provided to rapidly growing demand by commuters and goods.
    Massive employment opportunities can be generated to place the multiplying number of job aspirants, by using the huge funds being saved from reducing oil import bills.

    A new way of danda by central govt to collect fine fees from now two wheeler riders,
    people will die anyhow what ever may be the rules, for example last week indian racer dead in chennai inside the bmw car due to he couldnt open the door which car is struck between wall and a tree, what is the use of such a high value car which does not come help of him in this situvation , if would have our indian make car all the door have been automatically opend during the accident,

    The last sentence of your comment made me laugh out in burst.

    Let me add few more words. Since it was BMW the driver was still alive and died for not able to open door. Had it been Indian cars, then all the doors would have been opened up but the driver would have been not alive even to try to open.

    At least in BMW he his life last more time. :)
