Mangaluru, Mar 15: A shocking accident near Hampankatta on Wednesday March 15 was captured on video, evoking grave questions not only about negligence of bus drivers but also carelessness shown by pedestrians at times.

The video footage shows a youth walking along the road being suddenly hit by a KSRTC bus that seemed to be in a hurry to overtake another bus. The pedestrian, who has been identifed as Hakeem from Bihar, got flung on to roadside and some passersby are seen rushing to his help. Sources said that he suffered minor injuries in the accident.

Three points are of glaring importance here - One, it may be noted that the pedestrian was busy looking down at his mobile phone while walking, somewhat carelessly, on the road. Secondly, though there was a footpath where the other pedestrians were walking, he is clearly seen walking on the road, thus endangering his own life.

The third point is regarding negligence of the bus driver. It is said that the bus was overtaking the another bus at a high speed, and the driver failed to notice, or overlooked, the pedestrian in question. It is a known fact that bus drivers in the city do not care a hoot about other commuters or pedestrians.

All said and done, one should remember that safety is in one's own hand. Being busy on the mobile phone while walking on the road or driving/riding, and not using footpath can turn fatal. Luckily, in this case, the injury was minor.

A case has been registered in traffic west police station.

    I do not blame the driver and the pedestrian, really surprising. This is because if there was a footpath or signal then there would not be any problem. The main problem is why do we need the buses to stop there at the junction. The cones on the road are another problem some places in Mangalore the cones and barricades have disappeared. Whom to blame for this type of life? The private buses should be abolished and we should have good footpaths in Mangalore. The traffic police should be active not only harassing the bikers without helmet but also the cars parked on the footpath, making the pedestrian's to use the road instead of the footpath.

    As i was mentioned earlier..there is no footpath from kaikamba to padil..people are scared to walk..vehicals are comming over to people..no one notices..innocents are loosing their life..pleas do something..i mention OUR MP mr J.R,LOBO..AS HE HAS DONE MMANY GOOD WORKS IN MANGALORE..SIR PLEASE do something for this road or put path its very dangers..we have no idea weather we are reaching ome or not?this s every day problem

    Unless!!!!! All city & Mangalore buses belongs to KSRTC or single corporation like 'BEST' in Mubai this killing competition will not end.
    Hope Mr. J.R.lobo and Mr. Ramanatha Rai will show som light on the behest of peoples lives.
    Safety first then competition and Money.

    I feel the pedestrian and the bus driver both are at fault. Firstly in all growing metro's it is noticed that the cops are busy looking at catching motorists those who are violating traffic rules , which is important. But also should ensure that the people waiting for buses are not overflowing onto the road. If you observe most bus stops, people occupy the road forcing the buses to block half the road creating traffic jams and unnecessary commotions.

    Like the motorists, the pedestrian too should be fined for Jay walking. It is not easy to maneuver a big vehicle like a bus or an lorry. Public should also use their common sense at required junctures. There is not point blaming the authorities. We dont need cops at all instances, we should ensure we follow rules to facilitate smooth functioning of the traffic system.

    There is no proper footpath system for pedestrian in Mangalore... And also no proper bus tops... Timing system of these city & service buses another problem....
    For Ex. Jyothi theatre to busnts hostel road... There is no footpath, no Bus stop..
    City administrator should do some thing for this....

    even you build hifi footpaths people of this land habit of walking every where and any where just casually on busy traffic, we are seeing people crossing the roads atmost danegrous condition one small error will leed to deaths, in this case both are under fault,

    It is very clear that the Bus is driven at Hampankatta and not at remote area, the Pedestrian should be careful and walks as if he is not in this world. I dont see any fault of the driver. We should not blame drivers always.

    Mistake is also of Pedestrians who believe it is still a fashion to talk on mobiles on roads these days. They do not care about crossing roads or anything of that sort or they do not even care when some one advises them to correct themselves.

    Bus drivers in Mangalore need a special training session to drive carefully & I am serious about this issue. They care a " Damn " about other smaller vehicles or pedestrians on road. Thus Bus drivers claim that road belongs only to them and to none other .

    Once I had suggested to a senior Police officer in town that offending drivers' driving licence should be revoked and suspended to a certain period, with penalty levied as well, depending on gravity of accident. Say 03 months, 06 months or even more. No amount of influence should deter Traffic Police department from taking stringent action against these drivers. Only if we implement these kind of transparent penalty systems like few countries abroad, we will probably see better days in traffic movements in our city.

    It is shocking and clear evidence that the bus driver is recklessly driving. His DL must be suspended for atlteast a year so that he will understand his mistake and get corrected. Good to know that the pedestrian is not severely hurt. It is also grave mistake of the pedestrian walking in the middle of the road that too with mobile?. He also must be punished and hope he got it by getting hurt . By seeing this other's also learn lesson.

    The primary culprit in this case is the bus driver of the white bus, whom the KSRTC bus driver overtook to enter the bus bay. If he had driven the bus at normal speed and stopped at the bus bay to pick passengers, this accident would not have happened.

    Almost all the bus drivers deliberately slow down the buses to snail's pace thereby restricting the movement of other vehicles. Of course, the second culprit is the pedestrian, who despite the availability of foot path was walking on the road.

    We as Traffic Wardens are tired of asking bus drivers to stop only at the designated bus stops. They give all sort of excuses - from having an autorickshaw in front to people getting down from the bus when it slows down to every conceivable absurd excuse . . . - to justify themselves. Ultimately, it is the city that bears the brunt.

    What about pedestrians? The menace has become so much even girls, ladies even aged persons will talk on mobiles while crossing roads on busy roads, junctions obstructing and irritating others who walk on road, footpaths. Cant they talk after going to their homes. what is such emergency to talk on roads that too for for such a lenghthy time. Thats why accidents of this kind increasing everywhere. the traffic police should ban this.

    For the chaos on our road in particular and the society in general, everyone is to be blamed.

    - The government for not building broad roads, Foot paths, Signals, Clear signage,.
    - The motorist and pedestrians for not following rules, and sharing the road. Aggressive driving and road rage, the pedestrians for Joy Walking.
    - The police for corruption and not enforcing the law.

    Long story short, since no one is going to change then, what that cannot be cured must be endured.

    Here it Shows clearly the fault is pedastrian .He walks in a road middle so carelessly ,and with a mobile in Hand as if he walks in his house .Not even minding whats going on road or where he is .Everytime we blame bus Drivers,but here Driver was not mostly not fault.He has to drive and take care in middle of Hampankatta, where buses ,rikshas,and people walk as cows.To put a brake immediately was bit late.Of course he too must have not seen as he overtook?Cant deny he too has fault.Thank God fellow is not much injured.He should celebrate his birthday in future twice a year.Hampankatta is so conjested ,every step you take should be thought twice.

    Instead of Moral policing and doing all nonsense in the community they can help pedestrians to walk on the foot path and help police and nation. Educate all children and give at least few minutes news in Radio and TV about welfare. Is it possible in our Great India?

    I don't deny the mistake from the part of the driver. But in this case the pedestrian was equally negligent. Look at him casually walking right on the road as other pedestrians take the footpath. And look at him using his mobile. A very good lesson for him as well as for all the careless..

    We Indians got freedom. We destroy forest and we are complaining the forest animals attacking us. We are walking on the main road which is for Vehicles...... We will blame animals, or Bus driver. We don't have common sense that forest is for animals and road is for vehicle?????

    You are correct no footpaths in Mangalore..... so we walk on the road.... No land so we destroy forest and harm the trees and animals by capturing animal land. No toilets so we pass no 1 and no 2 wherever we get chance. This is India.

    I feel this is a clear negligence of the KSRTC driver if we look into defensive driving. A driver should be attentive and the guy may be doing wrong but he was right in front of him which was clearly visible to the driver isn't it ? I would agree on the side of driver if the guy was on blind spot . But in this case it isn't .
    Both have committed mistakes.if it was me I wouldn't even imagine that a bus may appear from that way and halt to that stop . I was seen in nanthoor where bus drivers drive over those warning polls . One year before it was renovated now they are damaged lol . No one follows traffic rules perfectly that's the problem in our India . Rules are rules . RTO is not at all strict .

    It looks like KSRTC buses are no different than private buses in recklessness...
    This very morning I witnessed around 07.15AM, a KSRTC bus (regn no with last 4 digits reading 2911 and if I remember well on route 6b) stopping to pick a passenger at at sharp turn before the UPHILL at Nanthur obstructing vehicles following the bus...

    I wonder when will we have proper sense of driving without causing inconvenience to other road users...
