Madikeri, Mar 14: A pick-up vehicle transporting 21 workers toppled in a tragic accident near Virajpet Kodava Samaja on Monday March 13. Though all the 21 workers are injured, the condition of four of them is said to be critical.
The incident occurred when the workers hailing from Assam were on the way to their homes at Virajpet after they finished their work in the farms in Kakkabbe. The driver was said to have been under the influence of liquor. The vehicle toppled at about 5.55 pm near Kaveri School when it was climbing the steep road.
21 workers were stuck under the vehicle and injured. Local people who rushed in groups had to struggle hard to pull them out. The workers were initially administered first aid at Virajpet government hospital and were taken in six ambulance vehicles to Madikeri district hospital.
Teams of doctors and nurses immediately attended to them. Workers were seen crying and bleeding. Different organizations have come forward to their rescue. The driver who is also injured and undergoing treatment had consumed alcohol during a party in the room of his friend in the afternoon.
Virajpet police have registered a case and taken up further action.
