Mangaluru, Mar 13: Supreme Court (SC) judge, Justice S Abdul Nazeer, exhorted lawyers to keep in mind that they are expected to shoulder the responsibilities of providing social justice to all classes of people and of building the nation.
He was speaking at the valedictory of 'Lex Ultima - 17' law fest at SDM Law College auditorium here on Sunday March 12. The two-day programme was organized by SDM Law College and Centre for Postgraduate Studies and Research in Law.
"There are lot of opportunities for those who have studied law. Lawyers should use their knowledge suitably. Many students have the notion that studying of law will not be able to bag them a job. This is not right," he added. He said that in the eighties, he was worried about his future prospects after studying law. He said with hard, dedicated work, he could achieve considerably in judiciary sector. He urged the young law graduates to make use of ample opportunities provided by judiciary to them.
He said that the advocates are being referred to as criminal lawyers, tax lawyers etc, while those who handle civil cases are called just as lawyers. He sought to allay the fear among certain lawyers that it might be difficult for them to argue in courts in English, stressing that by practice, one gets a firm grip on the language.
President of SDM Educational Society, Dr Veerendra Heggade, who presided over the programme, said that the judicial system in the country is looked upon with respect and reverence. He reminded that the system of delivering justice had been in vogue in the country since ancient times, and the practice of 'Huyilu' as a means of providing justice is still in vogue at Dharmasthala. He recalled that a dispute that was persisting since the last 94 years was recently settled through this system. He asked the young people to have faith in law and judiciary and that righteousness should protect law and law should in turn, protect righteousness.
Karnataka high court judge, Justice A S Bopanna, advised advocates to develop their personalities and make contributions to the society. Judges of the high court, Justice A N Vegopal Gowda, Justice John Michael D'Cunha, as well as additional solicitor general of the union government, K M Nataraj, addressed the gathering. Past students of the college, Supreme Court judge, Justice Abdul Nazeer, and judge of the high court, Justice Michael D'Cunha, were felicitated.
Retired principals of the college, N T Kadamba and Prof Rajemdra Shetty, principal, Dr Taranath, coordinator of Law Fest, Santosh Prabhu, secretary, Gautami S Bhandary, and others were present.
College principal, Dr Taranath, welcomed. Prof Maheshchandra Nayak proposed vote of thanks, Roopesh presented the programme.
