Tumakuru, Mar 9: In an incident which happened at Chikkanayakanahalli in the district on the night of Tuesday March 7, three students of a residential school lost their lives due to food poisoning. Two others are seriously ill and are being treated in a hospital.
The incident occurred in Vidyavaridhi International Boarding School, Chikkanayakanahalli in the taluk. After having dinner on Tuesday, five students had fallen sick. They were immediately admitted into a nearby hospital. After preliminary treatment, they were being taken to district hospital as their condition required treatment by a skilled professional, when three of them died. The deceased students were Shantamurty, Akanksha Pallaki, and Shreyas.
The condition of another student, Sudarshan, and guard of the residential school, is serious. Both of them are being treated in the intensive care unit of the hospital.
The school in question is run by former MLA, Kiran Kumar, it is gathered.
District health officer of the district, Rangaswamy, speaking about the incident, said that prima facie these deaths had occurred due to consumption of poisoned food. He said that the samples of the food consumed by the students had been sent for testing. He also clarified that other students in the hostel were not harmed as they had not consumed this food. "The five persons who were first to consume food, fell seriously ill. Therefore, others desisted from having this food," he stated.
A complaint stands filed in Chikkanayanakanahalli police station about this incident. Top police officers of the district are looking into the matter and investigation is in progress.
