Udupi: Serial thefts during early hours - three shops burgled

Udupi, Mar 8: Thieves struck it rich by way of serial thefts conducted in three shops located at Gundibail in the city between Kalsanka and Ambagilu. The theft occurred between 3 and 4 am on Wednesday March 8.

The shops which the thieves entered were Ultra Tech cement dealership shop, Photo Touch digital studio, and Deepak Jewellers. The shutter of digital studio was broken and found lifted up but nothing seems to have gone missing. 

 

The thieves gained access to about 2.5 kg of silverware in Deepak Jewellers worth about Rs 1.5 lac comprising neck chain, anklet, ring, silver plates and glasses, bangles, a 200 gram chain, and a waist belt (belly chain). The cash drawer of Ultra Tech Cement shop was broken open and about Rs 20,000 in cash was stolen. The thieves did not touch the laptop and other valuables inside the shop.

The theft happened in the early hours of the day. Footage from the CCTV camera installed in the neighbourhood showed a goods vehicle getting parked in front of these shops and two people alighting from it.

Owners of Deepak Jewellers and the studio stay in their rented houses located atop their shops. The doors of both these houses were found to have been bolted from outside by the thieves. However, the family members were fast asleep and did not come to know about the thefts till today morning.

Deputy superintendent of police here, Kumaraswamy, inspector of the town station, Naveenchandra Jogi, and other personnel visited the spot and conducted inspection besides making inquiries. The police have registered a case of serial thefts and begun investigation.
