Mumbai, Mar 7: Meenakshi, wife of Rajendra Shinde, a native of Katapadi Enagudde in Udupi district, was elected as the new mayor of Thane municipal corporation on Monday March 6. She represents Shiv Sena in the corporation council.
Meenakshi, daughter of the late Guruva Kantappa Poojary from Katapadi Enagudde, had won from Manorama Nagar, Manmad ward of Thane city corporation consecutively for the third time in the recently held local bodies election.
Out of 131 wards under Thane corporation, Shiv Sena has won in 67, leaving Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and BJP behind, which have secured 34 and 23 seats respectively. In Manorama Nagar ward, only five candidates had fought the election. Meenakshi had won the election with a huge margin.
Meenakshi filed nomination papers for mayoral election on March 2, and got elected to the post day the same day. As per the Election Commission rules, she was officially announced as the newly elected mayor of Thane only on Monday.
A number of leaders including Jaya C Suvarna, president of All India Billawa Federation and working president of Bharat Bank, have congratulated Meenakshi on her rare achievement and honour.
