Air India flies into record books with round-the-world all-women crew flight

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI): In a quest to set a new world record, Air India has operated a flight around the world with an all-women crew ahead of International Women's Day.

The flight which departed from Delhi on February 27 for San Francisco, returned at the Indira Gandhi International airport today after flying across the globe.

The aircraft, a Boeing 777-200LR, flew over the Pacific last week on its journey to San Francisco, while the return flight flew over the Atlantic, encircling the globe, Air India said today.

The airline has already applied for a Guinness World Record and Limca Book of Records for this feat, an Air India spokesperson added.

Air India is the first Indian carrier to operate on the Pacific route which has reduced the flying time by up to three hours.

Apart from the cockpit and cabin crew, check-in and ground handling staff, and engineers who certified the aircraft were all women, Air India said. It added that the Air Traffic Controllers who cleared the departure and arrival of the aircraft were also women.

As part of the celebrations on International Women's Day which is observed on March 8 every year, the flag carrier has also decided to operate similar flights on its domestic and other international routes.

San Francisco International Airport's twitter account posted series of photographs featuring the crew.

I would request Air India to do similar record breaking flight on International Family day. The booking should be open only to the families. I mean husband, wife & kids. The flight also needs to have pilots, air hostesses/hosts, ground staff, air traffic controller clearance staff who are husband & wife.

Earlier there used to be one or more connections for ultra long-haul flights which used to take long hours due to take off & landing at multiple locations and route not being almost straight from source to destination. This also used to be expensive for the airlines with most of the them fitted with 4 engines & takeoff & landings at each location takes a lot of fuel. Now with the introduction of twin engine 777 & it's counterpart in airbus, less passengers can be flown economically with less travel time, less burning of fuel & less tiresome for passengers. Building of new airports at different locations around the globe also has played a role as twin engine jets have less ETOPS (Extended Operations) rating than a flight with 4 engines. ETOPS is the distance in time of the closest airport for emergency situations from current location of the aircraft while in cruise. With newer versions of 787, it would be still more economical for the airlines due to much of the aircraft made from composite materials & much more comfort for the passengers with less jet lag & bigger windows. The new service from Air India uses Pacific route from New Delhi to San Francisco and Atlantic route during return flight to take advantage of tail wind to reduce travel time & fuel even though it is 1,400 kms longer.
