Kundapur, Feb 22: A woman who had opened a savings bank account under Jan Dhan scheme of the central government in a nationalized bank in the town on March 2, 2015, was shocked and surprised to find that her account was being operated by another woman since the last two years. Surprisingly, both the customers bear the same name. The branch manager too expressed surprise at this development and promised to sort out the problem.
Girija Poojarti, an agriculturist, had opened Jan Dhan savings bank account two years back in this particular bank. She also had got her account linked to her Adhar card and provided the details to gas agency for crediting LPG subsidy. She had also deposited some money she had, in this account. Since the last several months, she had not done any transaction in her account, nor had she visited the bank. On Tuesday February 21, she came to the bank and wanted to withdraw Rs 7,000 from the account. After she was paid the amount, another person with the same name, who has been operating this account since the last two years, came to the bank at the same time, and objected to this transaction.
It was found that both the customers with the same name were allotted the same account number and were issued with different debit cards. When Girija wanted to withdraw money from her account on Tuesday, the other woman said the money belonged to her. By then, cash had already been paid, and the bank manager asked the woman to refund the money, which angered many customers.
The bank manager said that he had taken charge of the branch a few weeks back, and was surprised to find on Tuesday that two persons were allotted with the same account number. He said that verification work of documents and transactions has been taken up, and it will be ensured that the aggrieved woman gets justice.
