Mangalore, Feb 24: A students’ convention to celebrate the centenary of 'Satyagraha Movement' by Gandhiji, was organised here by the district unit of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on Saturday, Feb 23. It was inaugurated by the union minister of State for Labour and Employment, Oscar Fernandes.
 
Speaking on the occasion Fernandes urged students not to be swayed by narrow parochial and regional considerations and also asked them to learn to think for themselves, as Indians first.

According to him the youth of today had the power to unite the country. Giving examples from past, he declared that "history is replete with instances of men and women sacrificing their own welfare for the sake of the country. There is a need for similar sacrifice from student community now.”
 
Moreover he added that the country will not make any progress if people identified themselves with any particular region, ignoring the larger issues of concerning the nation. He said Gandhiji was one leader who was admired and respected world over.
 
He therefore urged students to emulate him and it could be anything from a simple act of wearing khadi, the student community can lead a mass movement in the country, he  pointed out. This could be a worthy tribute paid to Gandhiji, he added.
