Udupi,  Feb 15: Unknown thieves took away valuables worth over three lac rupees on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday by entering two residential quarters of police personnel.

This theft,  which has come close on the heels of thefts in two police residences which happened a month back, has raised question marks about the safety measures undertaken in residences of the police personnel, who keep advising the people to take security measures against thefts.

One of the houses targetted by the thieves was that of Chennayya, working as assistant sub-inspector in Manipal police station. He resides in block No. 4 of police quarters. Gold ornaments weighing 157 grams and silver ornaments, totally worth about Rs 2,50,000, were stolen. The thieves also entered the house of Jyoti Laxmi, working in the office of the superintendent of police, who stays in block No. 5. 1.625 kg silver valuables, Rs 4,500 in cash,  and cell phone, totally valued at Rs 84,500 were stolen from her house.

While Chennayya was away visiting Shikaripur with family, Jyoti was on a visit to Kollur. The thieves broke the hooks of doors to which locked had been placed, in both the cases and entered these houses.

The theft at first came to the notice of the persons engaged in delivering milk sachets, on Tuesday morning. After they informed the police, a case was registered in Manipal police station. The police suspect the handiwork of the locals who seem to be getting information about police personnel going on leave or vacation.
