Mangalore, Feb 21: The inauguration of district level workshop for overseas job aspirants was held at Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Wednesday, February 20.

Deputy commissioner M Maheshwar Rao inaugurated the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that the native people of the district have done their best to find jobs abroad. Training in this regard would definitely help them to bargain for better pay and facilities, he opined.

The district has a population of nearly 18 lacs while in an average each family owns land of about 1.5 to 2 acres. Thus, it’s essential for the youth here to find jobs in industrial or other service sector, he advised.

Half of the students leave their schools without completing their education. Although they are capable of contributing their best in their trade, lack of training has proved hurdle for them. Therefore, such initiative has been taken to educate them on the prospect of overseas employment, he added.

He also urged KCCI to submit a list of skilled labourers needed in various fields.

Alexander Rodrigues, divisional coordinating officer of Indian Society for Training and Development, said that Indians were the highly skilled people before formal education was launched here. India became illiterate overnight when 10+2+3 education system was introduced here, he said.

'Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are districts where one can find the highest number of skilled labourers and India is the only country in the world which has the highest number of youth population. Let them be targeted for better prospects,' he urged.

Kumble Narasimha Prabhu, president of KCCI, presided over the function. S G Hegde, joint director of district industrial center was the chief guest. Wren S D’Souza was present on the occasion.

Giridhar Salian, principal of Government Women ITI, welcomed the gathering.
