Mangalore, Feb 16: Values are not timeless, they are subjected to change over the time; hence, there cannot be consistency of values, said M V Kamath, honorary director of Manipal Institute of Communication.
He was delivering the valedictory address at the concluding ceremony of the two-day national seminar on ‘Value-based Education and Literature’ sponsored by University Grants Commission (UGC), hosted by Besant Women’s College here on Friday February 15.
The ideal teaching does not just mean teaching a particular subject or stream rather it includes casting light on music of words and beauty of languages. The ideal reading infuses inseparable joy in readers, he opined.
Emotional satisfaction or emotional fulfillment is the saturation point of one’s reading. ‘We have poor conception of education; the objective of education should be to form a complete individual, he added.
Making special reference to the beauty of the great books, such as ‘Geeta’ and ‘Bible’, he suggested that a reader’s purpose should enable him to introspect and not merely take in information.
In the era of globalization where everything in the system is greatly influenced by the information and technology the responsibility of language teachers has greatly increased. They should work towards making students interested in languages, Prof AV Navada, editor of Tulu Sahitya Charitre, asserted on the occasion.
