Udupi, Jan 30: Former junior swami of Pejawar Math has filed a civil case in Udupi civil court the heads of Ashta Maths, including Paryaya Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math.
"Severe difference of opinion and non-cooperation have been found among the heads of Udupi Maths. Also, there were constant frictions during Paryaya celebrations, which have brought disrepute to the place of origin of Madhwacharya," former junior swami Vishwa Vijaya said, adding that in order to nurture and promote the culture and traditions of the Temple Town of Udupi, it was important that the heads of the Ashta Maths share a harmonious relationship.
Vishwa Vjaya had issued a legal notice to the heads of the eight Maths through a lawyer in January 2016 alleging that rules and regulations in the Maths are being modified according to the whims and fancies of some. As the eight Maths are a united religious organization, he had asked that the constitution be in written form and registered. However, even one year later, he has not received any reply to the notice.
Mangaluru-based advocate K S N Rajesh has filed the case on behalf of Vishwa Vijay in the Udupi civil court.
"The dispute erupted when Vishwa Vijaya, when he was in line for succession as a swami, went to America and was made to resign for violating norms. However, ten years later, Puthige Math's Sri Sugunendrateertha Swamiji, against his own statement, went abroad and continues to hold his position. The law should be the same for all. There is no written constitution in the organization. Vishwa Vijaya does not have any individual ulterior motive in the case," his lawyer stated in the petition.
Reacting to the development, Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji said, "Action was taken then as per the prevailing Math rules for travelling to a foreign country. Vishwa Vijaya has been in touch with me since then. He never mentioned to me that he was going to court against the eight Maths. I learned about it only this afternoon. I feel that we can settle the matter after consulting the heads of the other Maths. There is absolutely no tension between us. I am sure that we will find a way out for the problems specified."
