Udupi, Jan 28: Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Udupi unit staged a unique protest against Kambala, with a pair of buffaloes, in front of Clock Tower on Friday January 27.
Former MLA Raghupati Bhat was present during the protest and addressed the protesters. "The traditional sport Kambala has an age-old history. There is need to hold more Janandolanas (mass movements) to protect Kambala. Tamilnudu government has succeeded in lifting the ban on Jallikattu through a public survey. So, can't Karnataka?"
Kambala is safer than Jallikattu. If the Karnataka government passes the ordinance, the central government will certainly apporve Kambala. Moreover, many central ministers stand with, and are in support of the sport. The objection letter given by People for the Ethical Treatment of animals (PETA) to the Supreme Court, has disappointed those who love the Tulunadu heritage. If the government bans Kambala, why not ban chicken and beef?" the minister enquired.
"Kambala is not only a folk game, but it connects the diverse cultures and religions of Karnataka. There is vast difference between Jallikattu and Kambala. Many fighters have lost their lives in Jallikattu, but no such incident has been reported in Kambala. The SC has taken a hasty decision without understanding the background. Thus imposing restrictions on beliefs of the coastal people," concluded MLA Bhat.
He urged the public to support the Janandolana drive in the coming days.
Ansar Ahmad, president of KRV, Udupi and other party members were present to support the protest.
