Bengaluru, Jan 21: Ruling Congress party supported candidates have won a majority of seats in the recently held elections to 131 Agricultural Produce Marketing Committees (APMCs), claimed Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President Dinesh Gundu Rao.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on Saturday, he said the Congress supported candidates won 769 seats, BJP - 608 and JD (S) - 298 and others 45.

The ruling Congress party has won 179 seats more in this elections compared to 591 seats in 2011, he said.

Elections were held for 1760 seats of 131 APMCs across the State.

Asked whether BJP MLC, V Somanna would join the Congress, he said several BJP leaders were in touch with the party.

But he declined to reveal names of leaders who have evinced interest to join the Congress.

The opposition BJP was divided and leaders have been trading charges against each other, especially against the leadership of former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, who is also the State BJP President.
