Panaji, Feb 8: Goa chief minister Digamber Kamat today said that the alert has been sounded in the state and police have intensified checking to track down the possible terror links in Goa.
The step follows arrest of a suspected militant in Karnataka who had confessed about his plans to strike in Karnataka and Goa. The militant had said that he could not translate his terror plans into action as he could not get 50 kg of RDX from Pakistan.
"We have sounded alert all over the state. Security has been strengthened," the chief minister said.
He said that police department is carrying out checking to trace the possible links.
The chief minister said that he has held meeting with top police brass along with home minister Ravi Naik. "At no cost security of the people would be compromised," Kamat said.
Goa, the famous tourist destination is placed on alert during New Year celebrations almost every year, as it can be a soft target for the militants.
"According to our information, the militants had visited Goa thrice just to survey the coastal areas and crowded places," Home minister Ravi Naik said.
Naik said that the state government has asked for the complete details of the case and further comments could be made only after getting the details.
Highly places police sources confirmed that the militants had a famous beach in North Goa's Calangute-Baga beach belt on their radar.
The sources also confirmed that a famous discotheque in the same belt was also on their target.
