RBI hikes ATM withdrawal limit to Rs 10,000

New Delhi, Jan 16 (PTI): In a major relief, the Reserve Bank today more than doubled the daily ATM withdrawal limit to Rs 10,000 but retained the weekly ceiling at Rs 24,000. RBI however doubled the weekly withdrawal limit from current accounts to Rs 1 lakh from Rs 50,000 - a move which will ease cash position of small traders.

"On a review of limits placed on withdrawals from ATMs and current accounts, it has been decided to enhance the same, with immediate effect...," the central bank said in a notification. RBI had increased the daily withdrawal limit from ATMs to Rs 4,500 from Rs 2,500 effective January 1.

"The limit on withdrawals from ATMs has been enhanced from the current limit of Rs 4,500 to Rs 10,000 per day per card," RBI said, adding that it will be operative within the existing overall weekly limit.

The limit on withdrawal from current accounts has been enhanced from the current limit of Rs 50,000 per week to Rs 1 lakh per week and it extends to overdraft and cash credit accounts also, RBI said.

RBI had placed limits on cash withdrawals following demonetisation of old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on November 9, 2016. The 50-day demonetisation period ended on December 30. However, NRIs and Indians who were abroad during the demonetisation period have been given additional time to deposit their old currency notes.

after demonetisation, people become rich now. they can withdraw Rs.10,000 per day. if they are able to withdraw Rs.10000 per day then think about their income per year. then what is the definition of poor people & BPL?

this is the very good time to understand the attitude of those people who protest against demonetisation in the name of poor people. if they are against to demonetisation then fine, no issue at all, but they should not misuse poor people name for this kind of drama bcoz poor people don't have so much money to withdraw from the bank.

Hiking the withdrawal limits is welcome move.
However, most of the ATM's are dry, therefore makes the move also dry.
RBI should have first ensured functioning of all the ATM's

Good step by RBI in enhancing the withdrawal limits but better they soon lift this limit to have freedom to draw the money deposited in the bank without restrictions freely.

The real question is will ATM is able to dispense the daily allowed limit?
Secondly, under which RBI act it reserve the rights to restrict the withdrawal limits?
By restricting the amount how one would able to pay within the time limit(eg: Hospital bills)?

Lastly,In reply to Right to Information act it has replied 'personal injury' and 'national security' are the reason. If so why it has not written to Home ministry about additional security?
When main purpose of the demonetisation is to break the terror fund, how does the answering RTI amount national security?

People who demand for more than 25k per week must be investigated for their REAL income because these people should have come in the 30% bracket of TAX. But then we have just 25lak people in this bracket in the whole country.. The rest who have not paid tax but demand more cash not in sync with their declared income - are surely cheats or beggars who every now and then wake up and say where is my 15L.. LOL

What, Is the Govt. or the RBI doing a favour by allowing us to withdraw our money which is saved with difficulty. Looks like the RBI is giving the money free or as promised by the PM is giving us Rs. 15 Lakhs and rationing it. What the PM can wear a Rs. 10 lakhs worth suit, by the way whose money did he spend to wear that suit, surely the tax payers money. Demonetisation result will be known next month.

    @ Dylan,

Thanks to Tughlak's demonetization of the Indian Rupya,
World Economic Forum down graded Indian economic growth by One Per Cent, besides throwing India out of the list of "fastest growing economies of the world" !!

Are we in communist China or democratic India?. This BJP govt wants to control everything from choice of my religion, choice of my life partner, choice of my food, access to my own money, RTI, right to my own ideas and speech etc, etc Surely this is communism or socialism or dictatorship or desparate measure of Emergency in the making!!!

Om Swamy, tell your friends and relatives to pay the tax regularly so that this problem will not happen again. No democratic country can progress economically without people paying taxes. Only 2.9% of the whole population is paying taxes. Government is for the people and by the people. Modi is the PM elected by the majority of people and you are Government too.

That 2.9% you are talking about are my friends and relatives who are paying taxes to BJP and BJP is enjoying. So tell the remaining BJP, RSS, SP, RS, corporate honcho and ministers like Janardhan Reddy, Yeddy etc to make it a habit of paying on thier illegal hoardings plus excessive wealth tax. First set your house right and be a roll model before pointing your fingers to others.

people are able to spend lakhs for their dogs but they are not ready to pay the income tax & want to do all their transactions in cash mode so that they can hide their transactions.

again they oppose demonetisation in the name of poor people.
