Mangalore, Feb 7: Chintan A Modi, an M Tech student of National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NITK) here bagged the first place in the Tech Fest 2008 held at IIT-Mumbai recently.
Chintan stood head and shoulders above others in ‘wings’. He had designed a glider with the help of Gaurang Ghadiyali of Surat (Gujarat), which stayed for the longest time in the air.
The glider was remote-controlled and made at an estimated cost of Rs 10,000. To control the model glider two Servo motors were used. Gyro was used to make the glider stable in gusty winds. It stayed in the air for 25.4 seconds.
The wooden glider weighing 275 gms was hand launched from the fourth floor of a building. The glider made of Balsa wood was named 'Lazy Bird.' More than 150 students took part in the event.
Chintan Modi was awarded a cash prize of Rs 16,000, sponsored by HAL. Modi is into aero modelling since 2004.
