Mangalore, Feb 2: Manipal Heart Institute and the Departments of Medicine at KMC Hospital, Ambedkar Circle and KMC Hospital, Attavar jointly conducted a workshop on “Cardiology and Radial Intervention” on Saturday February 2 at Hotel Gold Finch.

A series of panel discussions and live case demonstrations were held during this Continuous Medical Education (CME).  It aimed at providing a platform to share knowledge among cardiologists in and around city, to promote radial intervention and train the other cardiologists of this region in this field.

The radial intervention technique effectively removes blocks in coronary arteries, on outpatient basis by passing catheters through the hand. Coronary angioplasty, that is, removal of block in the heart without surgery, was traditionally being done by passing catheters and wires through femoral artery (blood vessel of leg).

The patient should be admitted in the hospital for about four days for this procedure. Assistance from Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is also needed. The connected complication of this procedure is bleeding from puncture site, haematoma and pain in the leg. The patient will be confined to bed for a couple of days. He could return to normal life after about a week. With radial intervention the patient could be admitted into the cathlab in the morning and discharged in the evening after the procedure.

Dr Sunil Deshpande, COO, KMC Hospital, Ambedkar Circle said that this CME and workshop is another effort from KMC Hospitals to facilitate empowerment of the medical fraternity with the advanced tools and techniques in field of cardiology and radial intervention.

Dr C V Raghuveer, dean, KMC, Mangalore stressed that more and more students of medicine should participate in such programs as it would help them to gain good experience.

Dr Sydney D’Souza , HoD, Department of Medicine also emphasized on regularly conducting such live case demonstrations and said that they would provide an extra learning edge for the doctors and benefit for the patients.

Maheshwar Rao, deputy commissioner said that right use of this advancement in Cardiology would be of great help to the masses. Dr Nagendra Swamy, Group Medical Director, Manipal Health Systems presided over the function and said that KMC hospital have kept up their tradition of keeping patient centric approach in using any new advancements in the field of medicine.

Dr Yusuf Kumble of department of Cardiology delivered the vote of thanks saying that it would help in solving some common queries regarding radial intervention. Guest lectures by eminent cardiologists in Karnataka focussed on some newer concepts in Cardiology.

Senior Cardiologists Dr A V Shetty and Dr K S S Bhat (president, Cardiology Society of India, and Karnataka) were felicitated by Maheshwar Rao and Dr C V Raghuveer respectively. They appreciated the effort made by group of cardiologists towards spreading more awareness about radial intervention.
