Bantwal: Thumbay dam water level rises - inundates paddy field

Daijiworld Media Network - Bantwal (SP)

Bantwal, Dec 27: After the storage level at Thumbay vented dam which supplies drinking water to the city rose to five metres as decided earlier, water from the dam entered a two-acre paddy field at Karandadi in Sajippamunnur village in the taluk. Allegedly, this has caused loss of crop. It is learnt that these fields were not expected to be submerged as per the survey conducted earlier.

Zilla panchayat member, Chandraprakash Shetty, visited the spot after being informed about this development and held discussions with the farmers concerned.

He expressed resentment at the district administration and city corporation for doling out false promises in this regard. He contacted city corporation commissioner, Nazeer, over phone and urged him to visit the spot immediately and arrange to pay compensation to the affected farmers. It is said that the commissioner agreed to the request.

The city corporation has decided to pay rent for the submerged land to the land owners concerned. Chandraprakash objected to the corporation's method of fixing different rentals after segregating the land into urban and rural and fixing different rentals. He said that officials have fixed higher rent for barren land and lesser for fertile agricultural land and urged the officials to fix uniform rent to all the land owners.
