Mumbai, Jan 24: An elderly non-resident Indian passenger died at the Mumbai airport soon after arriving on a Malaysian Airlines flight, officials said on Thursday.

The 69-year-old passenger, identified as Girdharimal Jagjivan, arrived on Wednesday night and had cleared immigration when he collapsed, a spokesperson for the Mumbai International Airport Limited told PTI.

Family members alleged medical negligence on part of the airport, a charge which the airport authorities denied. They said all possible treatment had been provided to the passenger.

Custom officials said they called a doctor present at the airport at about 11:15 pm and also a co-passenger, who was a doctor, to provide him treatment.

"Our doctor provided the patient with CPR and medical treatment but there was no response. The patient was then taken out to a waiting ambulance where he was administered treatment again but he did not respond after which he was declared dead," he said.

Jagjivan's wife had told the doctor at the airport that her husband was suffering from hypertension and had not taken his prescribed medication that day, which could have been the cause of the incident, the spokesperson said.
