Mangaluru, Nov 2: Dreaded giant hornets have built a big nest on a tree at Bajal here. These hornets are known in local parlance as 'Kanchugara or Pilikunda'.

These hornets are feared by people because the toxicity of their stings are known to kill people. They are therefore considered poisonous and people keep distance from them.

The hornets have made their cozy home near the house of Henry and Teresa at Bajal. People living in the vicinity shudder at the thought of disturbances that may be caused to this nest by external factors which might agitate the hornets. It is said that burning down the nest during the night is the only way to get rid of these hornets.

Henry said he has informed forest department officials about the imminent danger from the hornets nest and asked them to help him out. He said that the forest officials have promised to do the needful tonight.

    Shankar,
I remember being attacked by single honey bee because I went to catch it while sitting on a flower. quite painful and irritation but there is way to remove the sing.
I had an expert fellow friend who used to catch them one by one and used to remove the stings. I failed in the test.
Kanchikura very common but should be careful when they enter the house.
Any other playful days or memories?

Single hornet sting is not lethal. It causes allergic reaction and swelling.
But multiple stings might be lethal, same like that of the honey bees.

These nest were common during our childhood. The hornets vacate the nests by december- january, but for sure in January, the nests will be empty. I remember after republic day celebrations, we used to hunt for empty kanchikara nests. they were beautiful possessions of any child.

I had seen them build a small nest in my car porch, it started from small table tennis ball size, I thought it would stop at that stage, but it became the size of a football later & it never stopped getting bigger.
I searched the web & found out what they ate & what might disturb them, they never sleep in the night as well as some think. Later one day it fell down with heavy rains not touching them, but the creeper they had built gave way in the night. They buzzed around & were moving their eggs & larvae to some other location, but never left their nest even after many days.
At last I took the decision to divert our car porch drain pipe when it was raining heavily & they all left & the remaining wasps & their eggs were carried away by ants that thrive & bite people when they climb mango trees outnumbering the wasps.
I only took this step as one bit my family member while watering the plant. Otherwise they were not harmful & to see them build & rebuild their nest is very educative & time stops when we gaze at them.
Don't burn them but chase them away with smoke or hose of water pipes of fire brigade with ample cover for those involved. Best of Luck guys.

    Acchu,

    Please do not venture!
    They not like honey bees.
Better to use 'Spectracide wasp and hornet killer spray' and that too by the professionals.
I have seen small nests around olden type houses but this is too huge.

Sad. I see that the nest has pepper creeper around. Poor man's crop will be destroyed if the nest is burned but its equally dangerous to let the nest be.
