Udupi, Oct 16: JCI Manipal Hill city, Lions club Udupi Indrali, Western Institute of Technology and Badagubettu Credit Co-operative society jointly organised a marathon race to spread awareness on cleanliness under the banner of ‘Swaccha nagara – Sundara nagara’ (clean city beautiful city) on Saturday, October 15.
People of all age groups participated in the marathon which commenced in Jodukatte and concluded at Indrali. District-in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj flagged off the marathon.
Speaking on the occasion, minister Madhwaraj said, “Udupi district has already secured the seventh place in the nation for sanitation and cleanliness. Our next aim is to secure the first place in the nation. For that to happen, such awareness programmes are needed.”
Prizes were given away to the winners during the valedictory ceremony at Indrali.
Jayakar Shetty Indrali, former district Lions governor, Subas, police constable, Walter Stephen Mendis, zonal president, Western Institute of Technology, Sandeep Kumar, JCI president, Jagadeesh Acharya, president, JCI Manipal hill city, Ln Mohammed Moula, president Lions club Udupi, Indrali JC Rathnakumar Indrali, zone director, Growth and development, Naveen, Western Institute of Technology and others were present.
In the marathon for men, Chidanand secured the first place, Parashuram came second and Anil Kumar, third.
In the marathon for women, Bhumika bagged the first prize, Adheeksha the second, and Neema third.
In the women’s category for senior citizens, legend Jyothi Shetty took the prize home. Ramachandra emerged as the clear winner for the men’s category.
Shashank and Haney Beskur received the prize for boys' and girls' category respectively.
First prize winners were given a cash award of Rs 5000, second prize winners took home Rs 2500 and third prize winners received Rs 1500.
