Workplace culture, lifestyle key to India’s mental well-being: economic survey

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 31: Mental well-being and workplace culture play a crucial role in shaping productivity and economic growth in India, according to the economic survey 2024-25, tabled in parliament by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday.

The survey defines mental well-being as a composite of emotional, social, cognitive, and physical health, emphasizing that it is not static but influenced by various factors, including work culture, lifestyle, and family bonds. It highlighted the adverse impact of excessive screen time, ultra-processed foods, and poor work-life balance on mental health.

Findings indicate that individuals who consume junk food regularly, lead sedentary lifestyles, or have weaker family connections experience poorer mental well-being. Similarly, stressful workplaces and long working hours can hamper productivity and, in turn, economic growth.

The report stressed that for India to achieve its economic ambitions, greater attention must be given to lifestyle habits developed from childhood. It called for fostering healthier workplace environments, promoting balanced lifestyles, and strengthening family and social support systems to enhance overall well-being and productivity.
