Udupi Dec 12: World Disability Awareness Week was observed here at the Vaikunta Baliga Law College jointly by the city District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), city bar association, Karnataka Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) and the city Red Cross.

Touching on the subject of problems faced by the disabled in today's times, in his inaugural speech Dr P V Bhandari, the chief administrator and psychiatrist of Dr A V Baliga memorial hospital opined that attitudes, infrastructure, communication and administration are the four major barriers created by the society against the disabled.

Further, according to him disability is a loss or limitation of opportunity (for the disabled) to take part in the mainstream of the society, due to loss of ability. Moreover Dr Bhandari said that sometimes even normal people suffer from disability which is not visible to all. Sympathy is one emotion which is abhorred by the disabled the most, instead he exhorted that they should be encouraged to expose their talents. He even urged all to help them to lead a peaceful life without hindrances.
