English FA appoints Greg Clarke as new president

London, Aug 25 (IANS): The English Football Association (FA) has announced the appointment of Greg Clarke as its new president and the successor of Greg Dyke.

Clarke's appointment took place during an FA meeting on July 22 last, but the decision was ratified only on Wednesday at the Wembley Stadium, reports Efe.

After the decision was officially announced, Clarke said on Wednesday: "I'm delighted to be confirmed at the next chairman of the FA and I'm relishing the challenge. My experience as a council member for the FA has given me an insight into the excellent work this organisation undertakes at every level of the game."

"It's an honour for me to be joining at such a pivotal point in its recent history and I'd like to thank the board and the council for their continued support," he added.

Clarke will commence his FA leadership on September 2, just two days before the England national team visits Slovakia to play in a first round match of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

England are in Group F along with Malta, Scotland, Slovenia and Lithuania.
