Mangalore, Nov 29: The Traffic department on Tuesday held parleys with IRCON and the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) on initiatives to streamline the chaotic traffic on arterial roads and NH-17.

The Traffic department met representatives of IRCON, overseeing the widening of NH-17 and took them to task for not installing reflectors, flashing beacons, LED (light emitting diode) edge-lit signs among others to warn commuters.

‘‘Some days ago, due to the negligence of the agency, a speeding car turned turtle killing a driver near AJ Hospital,’’ sources in the Traffic department told. The Traffic department warned of stringent action if their negligence cost another life.

Later in the evening, traffic department interacted with Mangalore MLA N Yogish Bhat, MCC commissioner, engineers and corporators. They solicited the help of the MCC to install traffic signboards, asphaltation of roads, building pavements and ensuring order at the Central Market.

The Traffic department also urged the MCC commissioner to implement some of their recommendations on creating school zones, early clearing of urban waste among others, shifting of bus-stands, removing of unscientific humps in the city.

Corporator fined: Former opposition leader and Independent Corporator Mariamma Thomas was slapped with a fine of Rs 100 by the Traffic department on Monday evening.

The car of Mariamma Thomas, though parked in an area not marked as no-parking area, was carted away for obstructing traffic movement and resulting in a traffic snarl near Bunts hostel on Monday.

‘‘Thus obstruction of traffic is also an offence punished with a fine amount of Rs 100,’’ Traffic cops informed justifying their action.
